Using the Becker Direction Finder

Using the Becker Direction Finder

7 Feb 2014

The Becker Direction Finder is a specialized flight instrument that helps Civil Air Patrol aircrews find emergency locator transmitters (ELTs) quickly and accurately. This instrument is far more sophisticated than earlier generations of direction finding instruments, but is also relatively easy to use once you master a few keystrokes and techniques.

We encourage Mission Observer (MO) trainees to watch this video, created by the Seattle Composite Squadron, prior to MO training flights. The Becker DF instrument is located in front of the MO seat in our aircraft, so the MO is, by necessity, responsible for operation of this device.
